Talyn Shears Blade Details

The inside of our scissors blades are hollow-ground and are concave. The deeper the hollow ground on a scissors, usually the better the scissors are. The reason for this is that the blades do not rub on each other and cause friction which will bruise the hair and create resistance while cutting. But to hold an edge with a deep hollow, the steel must be harder and superior to a flat blade.

All this together is called a ‘Clam-Shell’ or ‘Japanese’ style scissors. Or ‘Hama Guri Blades.’

Due to the unique blade design, Kamisori shears must be maintained as outlined

below. Care and maintenance is the key element in achieving maximum performance

from your Kamisori shears.

*Please note: Failure to perform proper care and maintenance on a daily basis will

most likely result in a damaged shears and unsatisfactory performance.

Please take the time to carefully read the following information. Maintained properly,

Kamisori shears will perform incredibly well. This information is the result of many

years of study and testing. The methods and techniques are proven, and ensure your

Kamisori shears will perform "like new" for as long as possible.

1. Cleaning:

Using a soft cloth towel, thoroughly wipe your Kamisori shears and blades after every

cut. This will reduce build-up of chemicals and debris, which may adversely affect the

performance of your Kamisori shears throughout your workday. At the end of the day

make certain your Kamisori shears are thoroughly dry between the blades.

2. Lubrication:

After cleaning and drying your Kamisori shears, carefully open to a 90 degree angle.

Put one or two drops of top quality scissors oil provided with your Kamisori Shears

into the "joint". It assists the cleaning process by washing out dirt and debris from

under the pivot and leaves a wax like coating.  This should be done at least once a

workday.

Why Oil and Clean Daily?

Daily oiling and cleaning will enhance the performance and extend the cutting life of

your Kamisori shears. Regular cleaning and lubrication protects against rust and

deterioration from chemical/moisture contact in the salon environment, build-up of

bacteria attracting debris in the interior pivot and blade area, reduces friction from

blade movement, and prolongs sharpness.

3. Adjusting Tension (Balancing):

Adjusting tension is an important part of getting the best results from your Kamisori

shears.  If your shears have a diamond studded dial, it is important not to rub on the

jewels while turning the tension knob. Repeated pressure on the jewels can cause

them to break off.  Rather, turn the dial from the ridged area around the side, not from

the top.

If the tension is too loose, it will allow your Kamisori shears to fold the hair. If it is too

tight, it will cause unnecessary wear and user fatigue. To test for tension, hold the

shears with the tips pointed upward. Lift one handle up so the blade is in a ninety-

degree angle and let the blade fall closed. If the blade falls completely closed the

tension is too loose. Rather, it should close about two thirds of the way.

4. Storage

When your Kamisori shears are not being used, keep blades in a closed position.

This will reduce the chance of nicking and accidental damage to the blades.

Never use magnets to hold Kamisori shears in storage. This can magnetize the

blades attracting undesirable dust and other particles.

How you store your Kamisori shears is very important. For adequate protection and

ease of travel, you should store your Kamisori Shears in the case provided.  They

should be secured in one position.  Leather is the material that is most

recommended for storage.

5. Sharpening

Your Kamisori shears, if maintained properly, will have a very long lasting edge.

When the time does come for re-sharpening, the process must be done carefully

through a professional sharpening service center that has the facility and experience

to sharpen high quality Japanese style shears.  Please do your research before

allowing your shears to be sharpened by a center.  Warranty will be void if improper

sharpening damages your shears.

6. Do’s and Don’ts:

Do’s:

1. Clean, dry and lubricate your Kamisori shears at the end of each workday.

2. Check your Kamisori shears for adjustment (tension), at least once each day.

3. Check your Kamisori shears for sharpness at least once each month.

4. Handle your Kamisori shears with gentle care. Protect the edges from everything

except clean hair.

5. Store and transport your Kamisori shears in the case they came in or in a leather

case/holster.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t use your Kamisori shears when they are nicked from dropping.

2. Don’t store your Kamisori shears when dirty.

3. Don’t "throw" your Kamisori shears in a drawer when not in use.

4. Don’t let your Kamisori shears come into contact with any comb sterilization, perm

or color solution; it may cause corrosion and other damage to your Kamisori shears.

General Information About Shears

Design a safe place at your work station for your shears to rest, and then get into the habit of always placing them there when not in use. Always close your shears when not in use. Haphazardly placing our shears on the work station often results in having them covered by a towel and dragged to the floor, which can cause nicks in the cutting edges. You can also use a finger ring attachment on your shears, which assures that even if you do drop them, they won't go further than your hip.

Never complete a cut if the section of hair offers resistance. This is the most important rule in caring for shears, and it is also the most common way stylists damage their shears. Struggling through a cut means the shears being used are too light for the task, and forcing the blades to cut can severely damage edges. Cut smaller sections instead.

Check the tension of your shears periodically - if it's too tight, the blades will grind against each other as they cut; too loose and they'll feel out of control and may develop nicks. To check the tension, with your left hand hold the shears by the ring without the finger rest, point facing up. With your right hand hold the ring with the finger rest, and open the shears so that it forms a cross. Release the ring in your right hand. It should drop only slightly - if it falls more than slightly, it's too loose; if it doesn't move at all, it's too tight. Adjust the tension accordingly with a tension adjuster or a well fitting screwdriver.

Never adjust the tension on your shears while the blades are open.

Always make sure your shears are closed before you move the tension screw.
